Titan Comics has just revealed the main and variant covers for the first issue of it’s ‘Penny Dreadful‘ comics which is set to flesh out the adventures of the hit Showtime series. Titan is well known for adding to existing televised franchises and has already made adaptations of such hits as ‘Sherlock’, ‘The Blacklist’, and ‘Vikings’ among others. The new series won’t help to satisfy the wait until the next season since it is set to drop in May alongside the premiere of the series’ third season.

The writing for the comic will mirror that of the televised series as it is being handled by Krysty Wilson-Cairns and Andrew Hindraker who are also the show’s writers. Art is being handled by Louie De Martinis (‘Madness’,’Heavy Metal’) which means that visually we should be in for a treat.

While we don’t know the exact plot of the books that may play into furthering the TV story at this time, it currently sounds like we’ll be getting a prequel to the original season. That being said, word has it that the comic would also flesh out the story of many of the characters which include but are not limited to: Ethan, Vanessa, Dorian Gray, and Sir Malcolm. The first issue will forcus on Vanessa:

“The hit TV series is presented in comics for the first time and the covers of issue #1 have been released! This prequel reveals the terrifying events that led Vanessa to try and find her missing childhood friend, Mina Harker, and exposes the true nature of the vampiric monsters infesting Victorian London.”

With the official cover by Guillem March (‘Batman’,’Catwoman’) and variant covers by Ben Templesmith (‘Bat Boy’,’30 Days of Night’) as well as De Martinis, it may prove difficult to decide on which one to add to your collection if you only plan on buying one. It might almost be worth holding out for the inevitable graphic novel if you’re planning to collect them all.
