For diehard ‘Deadpool‘ fans, one of the surprises from the film is that we were never shown that Wade Wilson’s love was actually a mutant. Any avid reader of the comic series knows that Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) ends up being known as Copycat, a mutant whose powers are similar to Mystique in that she is a shapeshifter. If you wondered why they didn’t think to include that in the film, though, the simple answer was that it was just too confusing for the movie’s plot. Hopefully the fact that they are planning to introduce Cable means that they won’t shy away from introducing another mutant as well if they are seriously considering revealing what she is.

According to writer Rhett Reese (‘Zombieland’,’G.I. Joe: Retaliation’):

“We did toy with [the idea], you know, but again, there was so much for the audience… We’re introducing a new character to the world, and so we didn’t want to muddy the waters with, ‘Wait a second, she’s also a mutant?’ So hopefully, we’ll see what happens if we’re afforded the opportunity to move forward on this world. It’s something that would probably be worth exploring at some point.”

So with ‘Deadpool 2‘ already set to happen it might be only a matter of time before Vanessa learns that she isn’t quite fully human. Of course, it could also be a plot point that is completely ignored as the Vanessa they’re giving us is quite different from the one in the comics. Hell, her first two years of being introduced were so that she could infiltrate ‘X-Force’ which hasn’t even been created yet in Fox’s mutant-filled cinematic universe.

Personally, I’m on the fence if they make her a mutant or not. I don’t think her story arc could be done anytime in the near future so to me, it doesn’t seem to be an overly important aspect to cover unless she leaves him due to being a mutant.

Do you think they should turn Vanessa into the mutant Copycat in ‘Deadpool 2’ or is she fine just the way she is? Share your thoughts below True Believers!
