A new take on ‘Spawn‘ has been in development for quite some time and Todd McFarlane has given us a couple of great updates!

While attending the New York Toy Fair, McFarlane was asked about the progress of the film and he stated he was working to make ‘Spawn’ R-rated.

The timing seemed perfect considering the massive success of ‘Deadpool.’ Anyone who was a fan of the comic in the 90s and beyond knows that if he sticks to his own source material then we’ll be in for quite a dark tale!

The movie has been in development for years so the R-rating should not be thought of as riding on the coattails of ‘Deadpool’s success, just good timing for McFarlane.

So what does he have to say about his “Hard R” rated adaptation?

“I’d put it more into the horror/suspense/supernatural genre. If you take the movie The Departed meets Paranormal Activity, something like that…In the background, there’s this thing moving around, this boogeyman. That boogeyman just happens to be something that you and I, intellectually, know is Spawn. Will he look like he did in the first movie? No. Will he have a supervillain he fights? No. He’s going to be the specter, the ghost.”

I’m on the fence on what he is describing here. While some of Spawn’s meatier stories did have him lurking in the background, he was also a warrior of Hell who had to deal with Satan, a serial killer, and another of the devil’s soldiers. That was all near the introduction as well, so it almost sounds as if much of that might not work if he considers any of these forces of evil to be a supervillain.

While violence has worked as ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Daredevil‘ have proven, another aspect has been sticking close to the source material. While it sounds as if McFarlane is looking to stay to the darker portions of his character’s horror roots, it almost doesn’t sound as if there is a plan to draw in larger parts of Spawn’s backstory. Of course, it could just be the feel of the movie he wanted to talk about.

Sadly there was no word that we’ll ever see the ‘Spawn’ animated series reboot.
