In recent talks about the Transformers movie franchise, the hot topic has been the plans of a cinematic universe with more sequels and spinoffs from the minds of Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Akiva Goldsman, and a brain trust of writers including Zak Penn (‘The Avengers’), Jeff Pinker (‘Lost’), Art Marcum & Matt Holloway (‘Iron Man’), Robert Kirkman (‘The Walking Dead’), Steven S. DeKnight (Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’), and more. But before we get to all of that, ‘Transformers 5’ is on the way. And with a 2017 release date quickly approaching, we finally have some word on what the film might be about.

While appearing at the Wings and Wheels convention in the United Kingdom, voice actor Mark Ryan (who voiced Jetfire and Lockdown) explained that the follow-up to ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ will focus on two very different storylines happening simultaneously. First, the franchise is shifting focus from the human cast to the robots in disguise, so the main thread will follow Optimus Prime as he continues his mission from the last film and searches the cosmos for the Quintessons, the tentacled alien race that created the Autobots as laborers and Decepticons as soldiers. From there, some assume that ultimate evil and bringer of chaos Unicron from the 1986 animated film will factor in somehow. Back on Earth, we’ll find Mark Wahlberg’s Cade Yaeger teaming up with the Dinobots to save the world from some kind of impending threat.

It’s important to note that these are said to be storylines floating around the writers’ room right now. They may or may not end up in the upcoming ‘Transformers’ film, but know that they are talking about other possibilities as well. For instance, there has been talk of a crossover with G.I. Joe in the same vein as the IDW ongoing series ‘Transformers vs. G.I. Joe’. So for now, let’s just consider these story details to be rumors at best.

What do you think about these possible storylines for ‘Transformers 5’? Are you excited about seeing more elements from the cartoons make their way into the live-action Transformers universe? What else would you like to see make the jump from Transformers mythology to the big screen? Sound off in the comments below.
