Captain America Steve Rogers coverWhen an unexpected chain of events lead to Steve Rogers being sucked of his Super Soldier Serum, he vacated the mantle of Captain America so that someone could step in to do the job that he no longer could. That’s when he passed the name and the shield onto his good friend Sam Wilson because the world still needed Captain America. However, when Marvel Comics kicks off the upcoming event ‘Standoff’ later this year, the Sentinel of Liberty will be restored to his former glory just in time for his 75th anniversary.

During the ‘Captain America: 75 Heroic Years’ special earlier this week on ABC, the House of Ideas revealed that Rogers would be resuming his place as Captain America in the very near future as part of the brand new book titled ‘Captain America: Steve Rogers’. Featuring words by Nick Spencer and pictures by Jesus Saiz, Rogers will be tasked with an all-new mission while sporting an all-new shield and uniform.  In a recent press release, writer Spencer shared his excitement for bringing the iconic hero back to the red, white, and blue:

“It’s an exciting time to be writing Captain America, for sure– this year is the character’s 75th Anniversary, not to mention the upcoming release of Marvel’s ‘Captain America: Civil War’. And with ‘Civil War II’ approaching in the Marvel Universe, it felt like the perfect time to restore Steve Rogers to his former self.”

With Steve becoming Cap once again, where does this leave Sam? Fans that have come to accept and enjoy the former Falcon’s new role in the Marvel Universe won’t be disappointed as he will continue to operate as Captain America as well. Just as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales are considered to be Spider-Man, the same idea will apply to the Star-Spangled Avenger. Plus, Rogers and Wilson’s individual books will compliment each other to create a different experience for True Believers:

“‘Captain America: Steve Rogers’ and ‘Captain America: Sam Wilson’ will act as great counter-points to one another. If you’re digging the topical, ripped-from-the-headlines approach we’re taking in Sam’s book, we’ve got plenty more of that to come. And if you’re up for a more timeless take, with Captain America facing off against Hydra and his classic rogues gallery, Steve’s book will be just the thing for you.”

Okay, so they’ll share the name, but what about the shield? There is only one of those. Well, as you can see from the preview art, Steve Rogers will wield a new shield that has some very unique features while Sam Wilson continues to use the original shield that was gifted to him. With so many Cap-centric events happening this year, it was only a matter of time before Old Man Steve reverted back to a place where he could resume work in the field. Though some fans may say that it this move comes too soon after his powers were taken away, it will be interesting to see where both Captain Americas fit into the post-‘Secret Wars’ Marvel Universe.

What do you think about Steve Rogers becoming Captain America once again? Will you be picking up ‘Captain America: Steve Rogers’ when it hits the shelves of your local comic shop this spring? Sound off in the comments.
