Star Wars Poe Dameron comic art 1There are so many characters to love in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. Obviously, there are the new heroes like Finn, Rey, and BB-8. There’s also the returning cast from the original trilogy such as Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Leia Organa. You might even find fans of the First Order minions Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma, and stormtrooper FN-2199 (who has come to be known online as “TR-8R”). However, due to the nature of the story, we didn’t get to spend as much time  as we would have liked with our favorites on the big screen. But thanks to Marvel Comics and their line of ‘Star Wars’ comics, we’re about to get to know the best freaking pilot in the galaxy a little bit better.

USA Today revealed today that the latest addition to the House of Ideas’ line of books from a galaxy far, far away will star none other than Oscar Isaac’s ‘Episode VII’ character Poe Dameron. The new ongoing series will be written by ‘She-Hulk’ and ‘Daredevil’ writer Charles Soule and will feature artwork from superstar artist Phil Noto. This won’t be the first time either creator get to play in the ‘Star Wars’ sandbox though. While Soule previously worked on limited series ‘Star Wars: Lando’ and ‘Star Wars: Obi-Wan & Anakin’, Noto’s trademark painted style can be found in ‘Star Wars: Chewbacca’. But that past experience won’t hinder their latest task of revealing what Poe was up to between ‘Return of the Jedi’ and ‘The Force Awakens’. Soule shares that the new movie and the new canon established by Lucasfilm and Disney has opened up some awesome storytelling opportunities:

“Sometimes it can feel like the ‘Star Wars’ universe is so well trodden and so many stories have already been told. But the way the ‘Episode VII’ galaxy is set up, there are opportunities for new archetypes almost, and the bad guy we’re working with is going to feel fresh and cool.”

This new title set to drop in April won’t be the first time that Dameron’s life has been explored outside of J.J. Abrams’ record-breaking movie. In last year’s ‘Journey to the Force Awakens: Shattered Empire’ miniseries, we met Poe’s Rebel Alliance fighter parents Shara Bey and Kes Dameron, who were both present on Endor following the destruction of the second Death Star. Poe was also included in the novel ‘Before The Awakening’, which explored the lives of the new heroes before the first film in the new trilogy. However, the upcoming comic is set to expand on his life as the leader of an X-wing squadron under the command of General Organa and a target of the First Order as he tries to track down Luke Skywalker. But according to Soule, the more interesting part is that Poe Dameron is just like us:

“It’s not as instinctive in some ways as writing a story about, say, Lando Calrissian was for me – I’ve been thinking about Lando Calrissian for 30 years, whereas Poe Dameron I’ve been thinking about for six months. [But] it’s silly not to explore the idea of a guy who grew up steeped in the Rebellion and the older Republic and all of those myths and legends. If you think about it, he grew up the way we did, hearing all of these stories.”

And finally, for those wondering who else will join the supporting cast of the highly anticipated comic besides other X-wing pilots and a First Order threat that we haven’t seen before, it is said that the loyal BB-8 will be appearing alongside beloved master.
