Despite all the attention currently vested in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ there was another trailer released last week for another venerable science-fiction series, one who will be celebrating the 50th year of their franchise in 2016. The ‘Star Trek Beyond’ trailer, which debuted on the internet a few days before it was released before ‘The Force Awakens,’ set up a lot of story points for the forthcoming film, but also made fans a little nervous. The film is now directed by Justin Lin of ‘Fast and Furious’ fame, (with Abrams having left for ‘The Force Awakens’) and based on the trailer, some fans are worried that the franchise might become ‘The Trek and the Furious.’ However, star and co-writer Simon Pegg has come out recently to assure fans that there is plenty of the ‘Star Trek stuff’ in there, so they have nothing to worry about.

As it is, Lin came into the film with a very specific mission in mind, which he speaks on in the below quote from an interview with ‘The Daily Beast:’

“At its core I felt that on this chapter if we could deconstruct Trek and then reaffirm why it’s great, maybe send it off and it’ll have a long run after this, that to me in a more cerebral sense was the mission on this one.”

Deconstruct definitely feels like the key phrase here, as the trailer shows the destruction of the ‘Enterprise,’ and the cast crashing onto a planet and being completely separated. Which of course will make for some triumphant moments when they all reunite, and somehow get back onto a ship (which I’m assuming will be some reconstructed form of the ‘Enterprise’), the only issue is whether the story will be able to stand on its own long enough to get the core elements back in line.

What are your thoughts on Lin’s mission for ‘Star Trek Beyond?’ Is there a chance he went too far? Or do you see real potential based on the trailer? Let us know your opinion in the comments below!
