How do you follow up the death of a major character on ‘Doctor Who‘? Well, apparently you deliver what is arguably one of the best episodes of the entire series. But now that Peter Capaldi’s Doctor has taken “the long way round” to get back home to Gallifrey, what does he have in store for the people that trapped him in that confession dial? We may have to wait until ‘Hell Bent’ airs on Saturday to find out, but there are a few teases available to whet our appetites.

BBC America recently released some new promotional material for the Season Nine finale of the long-running British sci-fi series written by showrunner Steven Moffat and directed by Rachel Talalay, who also directed last season’s two-part conclusion ‘Dark Water’/‘Death in Heaven’. First, the network shared a pair of trailers for episode twelve that feature a number of familiar faces (Maisie Williams’ Ashildr/Me, the Daleks, the Weeping Angels, and the Sisterhood of Karn) and places (that bunker from the 50th anniversary episode ‘The Day of the Doctor’) amidst talk of the mysterious entity known as The Hybrid, which has been prophesised to “stand in the ruins of Gallifrey and destroy a billion hearts to heal his own”. You can check them out below:

And speaking of familiar places, it looks like the Doctor might be venturing back to a place made iconic by his last regeneration. In the set of photos released by the BBC, it appears that the Time Lord revisits the diner from ‘The Impossible Astronaut’ in the next episode. Not quite sure how he gets to America from Gallifrey, but anything is possible with the Doctor I guess. Those pictures and more can be seen in this gallery, followed by the official synopsis of the episode:

If you took everything from him, betrayed him, trapped him, and broke both his hearts… how far might the Doctor go? Returning to Gallifrey, the Doctor faces the Time Lords in a struggle that will take him to the end of time itself. Who is the Hybrid? And what is the Doctor’s confession?
