For the longest time ‘Dark Universe‘ (the film formally known as ‘Justice League Dark’) was Guillermo del Toro‘s dream job to direct and with him out of the picture there are now 3 new names up for the director’s chair. The world of ‘Dark Universe’ takes on some of the more interesting characters in the world of DC Comics such as John Constantine, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Etrigan the Demon and Madame Xanadu. Magic users, creatures, and more which is a different take on DC’s universe than the world that ‘Man of Steel’ is crafting which is why it sounds like this won’t be too tied to the cinematic universe that they are building.

With Del Toro no longer involved there are some pretty big shoes to fill and three names are swimming to the top of the list which include the duo of Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado (‘Big Bad Wolves’) as well as Fede Alvarez (‘Evil Dead‘). I’m happy to see that the studio, like Marvel before it, is looking for directors who are used to working with dark material for their more supernatural properties. We already know that Marvel has tapped Scott Derrickson to direct ‘Doctor Strange’ and with his past work including films such as ‘Sinister’ and ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’ it seems that both studios know where to go for talent to make a darker movie.

Now while Alvarez as well as the duo of Keshales and Papushado sounds good on paper, no official jobs have been offered quite yet. It should be noted that Alvarez does have a couple of films in the pipeline so his availability might be more limited. With availability being why del Toro had to leave the project to begin with, this is a key factor which might have the studio deciding who they want to helm the picture.

There is no word as to if the screenplay that DC and Warner Brothers goes with will still be based off of the one that del Toro helped pen.

Are you happy to hear that DC is looking into horror directors to give us a movie based on the supernatural? Do you think in a world where Superman might exist that they’ll have the right kind of enemy for this unique brand of heroes to fight? Share your thoughts below!
