In one of the more surprising twists in the creation and expansion of the DCEU (aka the DC Expanded Universe, which is what Warner Bros is calling the universe where its upcoming comic-book movies will be based), it seems Warner Bros is now developing a “superhero buddy cop movie,” which will be starring Booster Gold and the Blue Beetle. It is not really all that surprising as talks of using the characters in some capacity have been around for years, from the Blue Beetle almost getting his own show during the ‘Smallville’ era on the CW, to Booster Gold almost getting his own show on SyFy, to the studio refusing the allow the CW’s DC shows (‘Arrow’ and ‘The Flash’ and ‘Legends of Tomorrow’) to use either character in their universe.
What is interesting about the announcement is the idea that Warner Bros wants this to be more of a comedic movie, which is markedly different from the rest of the grim DCEU, even though they also make sure to state that “The dynamic duo are also members of the Justice League and are being planted now to appear in a future JL movie down the road.” Which, to me, means that they might have some time-travel storylines down the road for a ‘Justice League’ movie, as Booster Gold and his backstory have everything to do with traveling through time. Also of note is that Greg Berlanti (of ‘Arrow’ and ‘The Flash’ fame) has been tapped to direct and serve as Executive Producer on the project, and with his involvement in ‘The Flash’ movie and the ‘Green Lantern Corps’ movie, that means that he will have a larger hand in the DCEU than expected, especially since he is already so heavily involved in DC’s TV projects.
