It’s been ages since we last paid a visit to the paranormal investigators of ‘Torchwood’, but that is about to change in a manner when Big Finish releases its now series of audio adventures starring John Barrowman, reprising his role as the immortal Captain Jack Harkness.  For the first part of the series, entitled ‘The Conspiracy,’ Barrowman will be joined by voice actors John Sessions, Sarah Ovens and Dan Bottomley in a tale that pits Captain Jack (and whatever associates he has that are still alive) against the shadowy organization The Committee that has been clandestinely pulling the strings to all manner of areas of society, with deadly consequences.

Here is the official synopsis for ‘The Conspiracy’:

“Captain Jack Harkness has always had his suspicions about the Committee. And now Wilson is also talking about the Committee. Apparently the world really is under the control of alien lizards. That’s what Wilson says. People have died, disasters have been staged, the suspicious have disappeared. It’s outrageous. Only Jack knows that Wilson is right. The Committee has arrived.”

‘The Conspiracy’ was written by David Llewellyn and will be available on September 30, 2015 with additional chapters being released monthly until February 2016.

Big Finish has released an audio trailer for the first part, which can listen to below and enjoy Barrowman reprising his signature role:

But that isn’t the big news!  Not by a long shot!

Another alumnus of the original ‘Torchwood’ TV series is returning for the second installment.  And no, it isn’t Eve Myles, although that would be the natural assumption.  It’s– drumroll– Gareth David-Lloyd!

Yes, Ianto Jones is the focus of the second story in the series!  Or should I say, the dearly departed Ianto Jones?

Just like the majority of the primary cast, Ianto was sadly killed off, in his case in ‘Children of Earth.’  Exactly how does he pop back up for the second ‘Torchwood’ audio book, entitled ‘Fall To Earth’?  Well, that isn’t clear.  It’s possible these stories take place before his death (and before the show jumped the shark).

But nevermind, because Ianto’s back and Gareth David-Lloyd is playing him!  In the story, Ianto finds himself on board the first privately-funded spaceflight, which suddenly begins to plunge from the sky.  ‘Fall To Earth’, written by James Goss ties into ‘The Conspiracy’ as part of a larger storyline.

Now of course some are going to complain that this is an audio series instead of being on TV, which is understandable.  Though not as ravenous as ‘Doctor Who”s, ‘Torchwood’ has a very passionate fan base itself, most of whom grew increasingly frustrated with the show as it progressed and most of the original cast was killed off.  Then came, perhaps the nail in the coffin, a poorly conceived attempt to Americanize it in a joint production between the BBC and Starz, entitled ‘Miracle Day.’  ‘Torchwood’ definitely deserves to be redeemed in a larger scale, but considering that it’s laid dormant for years now, getting ANY new ‘Torchwood’ is at least a step in the right direction.

Perhaps the new audio series can help begin the process of reconstructing this series by returning to the elements that made it such a fan favorite in the first place.

Will you be tuning in to the new ‘Torchwood’ audio series?  What else do you hope to see hear in the stories?
