Disney XD should have a hit on its hands with their new ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ animated series.  To drum up excitement, Disney is releasing short digital shorts that detail the origins of the cast, who most people easily recognize from one of last year’s top films.

Just release is the two-part story of Rocket Raccoon (or just Rocket, as he is referred to as, but you can’t trademark that).  He starts off as just a regular raccoon, but thanks to science becomes a bipedal, gun-toting, ship piloting roughneck.  Also appearing in this tale is his trusty buddy Groot.

Check out the videos below:

Sure the characters can’t be quite as crass as they were in the movie, but the rowdy spirit is clearly still there.

Trevor Devall provides Rocket’s voice, stepping in for Bradley Cooper.  Kevin Michael Richardson utters “I am Groot,” taking over for Vin Diesel.  Busy voice actor Richardson previously voiced Groot on ‘Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.’ and ‘Avengers Assemble’.  Devall also voiced Rocket on ‘Avengers Assemble’ and various Marvel characters in made-for-DVD movies.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy follows the newly-formed team who finds a strange artifact keyed only to the DNA of Peter Quill. Upon opening it, Quill unleashes a treasure map leading to a powerful weapon known as the Cosmic Seed which is capable of giving birth to the next universe. It’s up to the Guardians to find, protect and ultimately destroy the Cosmic Seed in order to keep it out of the hands of those who would abuse its power, from galactic big boss Thanos, to the conniving brothers the Collector and the Grandmaster, to a resurrected Ronan, to the ultimate trickster, Loki, in order to save the universe.

Will you be turning in to the further animated adventures of these spaced out heroes?
