With Warner Bros dropping a release date of December 15, 2017 for ‘Ready Player One,’ it seems more likely than ever that Steven Spielberg is indeed making this movie. Of course, the vaunted director is well-known for being picky about what projects he is working on, often dropping out of films after months of work simply because he no longer felt it was the right project for him. Hopefully that will not be the case here, especially with Warner Bros touting the film and its release as Spieldberg’s triumphant return to the studio, his last movie with them being ‘A.I. Artificial Intelligence’ back in 2001. And while there is still plenty of time for him to abandon ‘Ready Player One,’ fans are hoping he will stick around, as the film seems like a perfect fit for the man.

For those not in the know (which included yours truly), ‘Ready Player One’ is based on a science-fiction novel by Ernest Cline that takes place in 2044, where a teenager competes in an online competition within the virtual world of OASIS, where the winner of the challenge will win the fortune of the game’s deceased founder, James Halliday, as the prize (think ‘Willy Wonka’ in the computer age). Why is it perfect for Spielberg? Because the trick to winning the game is figuring out the clues, which are all based on Halliday’s love of 1980s pop culture, a culture that Spielberg himself helped create. He alone would have the best chance at acquiring the rights to a number of the 80s nostalgia pop-culture clips, audio bites, and props that are sure to factor into the movie, especially since he created or helped produced some of the most iconic movies of the era.

What are your thoughts about ‘Ready Player One’ coming to the big screen with Spielberg at the helm? Will he be able to pull it off without somehow introducing daddy issues to the hero and making the movie all about that? Or is he the perfect fit for the movie?
