Brace yourself ‘Star Trek’ fans, the future is coming, this time in comic book form (since the movie will not be out for another year, and there has not been a TV show for over a decade). IDW has announced a new comic book series to run alongside the current ‘Star Trek’ comic, which itself is about to celebrate the release of its 50th issue, which marks it as one of the longest running ‘Star Trek’ comic ever. The 50th issue will contains lots of behind-the-scenes content, and will be the first in a 3 part mini-series wherein the comic will have the alternate timeline Enterprise crew tackle the classic ‘Mirror, Mirror’ story from the original series.

The new series, titled, ‘Starfleet Academy’ takes place before the 2009 movie, and will feature the crew of the Enterprise as they train in the academy, as well as feature a present day Starfleet class that is still in the academy while the Enterprise crew is out exploring the universe. The new comic will be written by Mike Johnson (‘Star Trek’) and Ryan Parrott (‘Batman: Gates of Gotham’) with artwork by Derek Charm (‘Powerpuff Girls: Super Smash Up). IDW believes that fans are fascinated by the training young starfleet officers receive, in the words of IDW editor Sara Gaydos:

“The fan enthusiasm surrounding Starfleet Academy, much like Harry Potter’s Hogwarts, or X-Men’s Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, shows that the educational lives of our most beloved heroes makes for fantastic stories…I am so excited to flesh out a new chapter in the lives of the Enterprise crew, while introducing you to a great new team of recruits – – ready to boldly go!”
