The end of the line is in sight as ‘Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension’ is set to finish the found footage blockbuster series which has owned the Halloween weekend every year an installment has been released. When ‘Paranormal Activity‘ shocked viewers at the box office in 2009, no one knew a franchise was going to be born and now it will finally be coming to a close. Good news for those who hate this kind of movie but horrible news for the legions of fans who love them.

It sounds like many if not all of questions brought up in the five films so far will be wrapped up as we are finally not only be given answers about the demonic entity simply known as Toby but will finally see it on screen as well.

Of course just because the movies are coming to a close doesn’t mean we’ve seen the complete end to this world as there is also a ‘Paranormal Activity’ virtual reality experience in the works, but producer Jason Blum does state the end is here:

“It’s coming to an end. This is it, the finale. We’re saying it before the movie opens. We’re not going to grind this horror franchise into the ground. This will keep Paranormal Activity as part of this culture and this particular time in a really fantastic way… All the questions that everyone has asked from the past ‘Paranormal Activity’ films: What does Toby look like? What’s the backstory to the families? These questions have been teased out. Now they will be answered.”

One can only hope that finally seeing Toby and learning about him will give us all a satisfying bookend to the series.

Producer Oren Peli adds that:

“We’ve done well without showing Toby, being able to create tensions and scares based on audiences’ imagination. But people are very curious.”

What is interesting though is the way he phrases that this will be the final chapter of what was started in ‘Paranormal Activity.’ However, I’m really thinking we might be seeing more of it down the line as well as Peli states:

“At some point, might there be a reboot? You never know. We’ve never discussed it. (But) we made this movie like it’s the end of this Paranormal line for sure.”

With a reboot not being firmly off the table and the phrasing being “this Paranormal line,” it wouldn’t surprise me if another Paranormal line ended up showing up sometime in the future. Who says that there aren’t more demons, possessions, and hauntings that can play out on the big screen on a microbudget? Clearly the studio has a working formula and while I appreciate that they aren’t going to milk this current story line to death it doesn’t mean that they can’t return to the concept down the line.
