Elizabeth Banks (‘The Hunger Games‘,’Pitch Perfect 2’) has already moved on from just acting and will be sitting in the director’s chair for the book to film adaptation of ‘Red Queen.’

Having starred in ‘The Hunger Games’ and having huge success directing the sequel to ‘Pitch Perfect’ it seems like a no brainer that she would be looking to direct a young adult action film that could potentially spawn a trilogy with how well they’ve been doing at the box office. I’m sure it helps that ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ made $70.3 million at the box office on its opening weekend and held its own by pulling in higher viewership than fan favorite ‘Mad Max: Fury Road.’

The novel is written by Victoria Aveyard and is a young adult romance and fantasy tale which is the first book in a trilogy. Universal Pictures optioned the film in 2013 and has put together a screenplay by Gennifer Hutchison (‘Breaking Bad’.’Star Trek: Enterprise’) with Pouya Shahbazian (‘Divergent‘,’Insurgent‘) on board as the producer.

‘Red Queen’ gives us a new world of segregation but instead of skin color we see it is the color of a person’s blood that sets them on their path for life. Red blooded humans are basically slaves to those who are born with silver blood. The silver blooded humans also have the bonus of having supernatural powers which helped cement their place as the ruling class. Only, the social norms are thrown to the wolves when Mare Barrow is born with red blood but develops electricity-based powers and has to fight in order to save her family.

Are you looking forward to seeing ‘Red Queen’ show up on the big screen? Is a young adult film with super powers and a romantic angle something that could be a huge fit or are both markets growing too large to support themselves? Share your thoughts below!
