In the Paul Feig-directed remake of ‘Ghostbusters’, the four central roles, originally played by Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson, are being taken over by female comedians, frequent collaborator Melissa McCarthy, who currently stars in Feig’s ‘Spy,’ along with her ‘Bridesmaids’ costar Kristen Wiig and ‘SNL’ players Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

In the original movies, the guys were assisted by their blase receptionist Janine played by Annie Potts.  With the role reversal of a female team of Ghostbusters, it makes perfect sense that their assistant be male, right?  Feig thought so and made the big casting announcement via Twitter:

Chris Hemsworth is on a roll when it comes to revamps of classic eighties movies and the Aussie import and occasional God of Thunder has no problem turning the tables on outdated sex roles.  He’s already filmed a cameo in ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’, where his divine physique replaces the eye candy in the original movie, provided by Christy Brinkley:

Hemsworth was the least known actor among the headlining Marvel stars, so he is still building his name.  These smaller parts should help his steady rise.

It’s not clear yet exactly how much will be taken from the original movies.  This could essentially be a brand new movie, with the same name as the original.  Or it could be a closer adaptation.  If so, Hemsworth’s role should be fairly small as Janine’s was in the first movie.  It wasn’t until ‘Ghostbuster 2,’ that she got a bigger role.

The new ‘Ghostbusters’ is in pre-production, so the rest of the cast should be shaping up within the next few weeks.  Hopefully, some story details will emerge as well, so we have a better idea of what to expect.
