On Saturday, social media erupted with the news that Ireland had legalized same sex marriage.  One geeky fan tweeted ‘Harry Potter’-creator J.K. Rowling, enthusiastically declaring that now Albus Dumbledore, the wise headmaster of Hogwarts, was free to marry the ‘Lord of the Rings’ wizard Gandalf, to which Rowling happily reacted.

Well, things are never that simple are they?

After Rowling’s endorsement, none other than the Westboro Baptist Church took to Twitter to denounce the writer’s reaction.

The Westboro Baptist Church is an extreme hate group based out of Kansas that has made a name for itself by picketing military funerals and other public events, in opposition to gays, Jews and politicians.  The group also claims that the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are punishments from God.

In 2007, Rowling casually revealed that Dumbledore was gay, during an interview.  The revelation raised eyebrows but didn’t cause much controversy.  Just a month ago, Rowling defended her creation to a fan who had trouble grappling with the idea.
