There was previously a very large rumor that Quicksilver and his sister the Scarlet Witch were getting huge history retcons in ‘Uncanny Avengers’ and now that rumor has been confirmed. It seems the change is that the two are no longer mutants at all!

In a preview page from ‘Uncanny Avengers’ #4, fans are given the true heritage of Pietro and Wanda Maximoff in the latest line of retcons of their history. With Magneto no longer being their father, it looks as if everything has changed once again for the siblings and you would never guess who is actually responsible for their powers.

Well, unless you’ve been reading the series at which point the reveal isn’t too surprising. The retcon feels a bit too convenient, not only for what is going on with Marvel’s Cinematic Universe as they are portrayed in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ but that the clues don’t feel as if they fit with the overall reveal of who created them and that character’s history.

Let’s take a look at the spoiler image below that shows us that the Maximoff duo have powers because of …

… a failed experiment by High Evolutionary! Honestly I never would have seen that coming up until this new run of the series. I do enjoy that in a one off comment he states he disguised them as “common mutants.” That would explain the years of Cerebro and Sentinels thinking they were mutants. I felt when the original rumor surfaced of the twin’ origin retcon, it would be a stumbling point but with such a casual offhanded remark, it was able to explained it without going into detail.

Well done.

So what does that really change here for the characters? Not much aside from the fact that when Fox’s X-Men became more popular, the comics downplayed them and killed off Professor X and Wolverine. With a ‘Deadpool‘ movie in the works they’ve now also killed off the Merc with the Mouth. With the ‘Fantastic Four‘ coming out with a new team, they just split Marvel’s First Family up in the comic series. So I’m sure that this new revelation is conveniently happening as they have now been introduced into Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and not for anything specific beyond that.
