Towards the end of 2013, we heard that ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Conan’ star Jason Momoa would be joining the cast of ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.’ By the following year, he was confirmed as the new and improved Aquaman in the DC Cinematic Universe. Now, we know what the former Khal Drogo will look like as the King of the Seven Seas when he stands side by side with Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel and Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight thanks to an exclusive picture from Zack Snyder. However, the actor was just as surprised as we were to see the director’s reveal the first look at the character so soon.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Momoa shared that he was not informed of the unveiling prior to Snyder’s Twitter post. Although, he certainly wasn’t complaining since it was able to collect some buzz around another project that the actor is working on for the Sundance Channel:

“That was a shocker for sure. It was supposed to be a surprise in 2016, so it definitely helps [‘The Red Road’]. I’ve been holding that secret for a long time. Zack Snyder called me up and said, ‘I’m posting this picture now.’ He’s just a genius and I love him to death. He sent it over and we’re in the middle of the editing suite for the thing I’m doing right now, and we all freaked out, man. It was so amazing to see it come out.”

Obviously, this won’t be the last time that we’ll see Aquaman in his newly badass form. Momoa is signed on to play the role at least four times, but how is the first appearance of the Pacific Islander incarnation of the character coming along? Apparently, the answer is slowly at the moment, but the best is yet to come:

“No, we haven’t done too much on the action yet. You know, ‘Justice League’ is still quite a ways away. But I’m looking forward to it. Henry’s a sweetheart, Ben is a badass, so I’m really looking forward to when we all shoot ‘Justice League’.”

Finally, Momoa acknowledges that Aquaman isn’t exactly regarded as the best superhero ever, but he teases at a few of the changes being made by Zack Snyder to amp up the Aquatic Ace:

“The whole mythology of Aquaman is pretty amazing. There’s so many things to tell, and there’s a whole backstory that’s just amazing. There’s a lot of surprises coming. I think, yeah, he’s been cast aside. But, um [laughs] times are going to change now, buddy.”
