It should be of no surprise to fans of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ comics that James Gunn doesn’t plan on following them when he creates ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2.’ The first film strayed quite a bit from them on many of the characters and situations and I believe most of us can say that it was for the best. The film was witty, action packed, easy on the eyes, and just an all around good time. If Gunn wants to recreate that kind of an experience again, I have no problem with him not sticking directly to Marvel canon.

Let’s be honest. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is well known for taking liberties with the source material. While many have clearly stayed faithful to a mixture of the regular and Ultimate source material to create the cinematic world, there have been changes.

So what basis will the sequel be on when it lands in theaters on May 5th 2017? According to Gunn:

“It’s not really based on anything. The story for Guardians 2 is an original story that I came up with that I started working on actually while I was shooting Guardians 1, and it’ll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill’s father and who he is and what’s going on with that. We’ll get to know some of the characters a little bit more and then we’re going to meet a couple of new characters who will be very important to Guardians movies and probably important to the Marvel Universe as a whole.”

New team members? While we know there is supposed to be at least one new female joining the team my money is that Adam Warlock will be making his appearance here. For those unfamiliar with the character, he is pretty much the major hero that typically has thwarted Thanos over the years when the Infinity Gems have been involved. However the film is toted to not be a setup for the Infinity War so I’m not sure how prominently they may feature Warlock if at all.

Some possible leading ladies could be Moondragon, Angela, and Captain Marvel. Moondragon turns out to be Drax’s daughter that isn’t actually dead. Angela is an Asgardian who is currently working with the team on a limited basis. Finally Captain Marvel is scheduled to get her own film and could be an unexpected character to tie-in.

On big change though on who we shouldn’t be expecting to see is Jason the King of Spartax:

“It’s different than what’s in the comic books. Peter Quill’s father is somebody different in the comics. So then when the movie came out, we got green-lit on the sequel right away. I went in and I sat down with those guys and I’m like, ‘Okay, here’s what I think the sequel should be.’ And they were like, ‘Oh, whoa. That’s risky, but okay.’ Now I’m going to turn over the story in a few short weeks and we’ll find out how well it works.”

So who will Quill’s father be? Hard to tell for now. However, if even Yondu thought he was kind of a bastard there are a lot of possibilities out there. Perhaps Adam Warlock is the father and that would tie the character into the film? Possibly Starfox to tie him further in with Thanos? I think that second one seems far less feasible. Still, it would have to be a larger character for this to really make sense.
