During a holiday livestream, Hideo Kojima introduced a special chicken hat item that can be equipped in the upcoming ‘Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.’

The hat gets revealed at around the 2:44:00 mark of the stream below. According to Kotaku, the chicken hat is an in-game item that is unlocked if the player dies or gets caught too many times. It basically gives players invincibility and makes enemies react slower, thus giving the player a bit of an advantage during the game’s tougher sections.

The chicken hat can also do some special things on top of assist the player, such as glow in the dark. However, once the player dons it, they are basically stuck with it, meaning that the goofy headwear will even show up during cutscenes as well.

Unfortunately, all of what the chicken hat has to offer comes at the cost of technically being labeled as a chicken by the game. It’s sort of like the purple ribbon in ‘Ninja Gaiden Black,’ an item that is put onto the player when they chose to play the game’s easy mode after dying too much.

‘Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’ is the newest entry in the long running stealth game franchise. Taking place where ‘Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes’ left off, ‘Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’ puts players back into the shoes of Snake aka Big Boss as he tries to seek out vengeance against those responsible for destroying his mercenary organization, Militaires Sans Frontières (MSF). However, his efforts lead him towards uncovering a plot that threatens to surpass that of Metal Gear itself, and Snake is left to refocus his efforts in order to save the world once again.

‘Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’ does not have a firm release date yet but is scheduled to come out for PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Windows PC sometime in 2015.
