If you didn’t have enough Stephen King news this year with all of his new movies and television shows coming out you’ll be happy to hear that a musical version of ‘The Shining’ is in the works! The musical itself is taking a slightly different name and will go off of the working name ‘Redrum: The Unauthorized Musical Parody of The Shining’ and might be done in a way that King himself will either love it or hate it.

While King is full of hatred for Stanley Kubrick’s take on his novel, it seems that this parody is actually a parody of Kubrick’s work. Does this mean it might hit the right notes to make the master of horror smile? We’ll see what writer and director Joe Lovero (‘Book of Leo’) comes up with when it hits the stage. In this musical piece, the lyrics will be penned by Lovero while everything else you hear will be by composer Jon Hugo Ungar’s score.

If nothing else, this might be just the thing to tide you over until the prequel to ‘The Shining’ is released while putting a smile on your face at the same time.

When the idea came to him Lovero says:

“REDRUM was born like most major works of musical theater – drunken spouses on their 2nd (3rd?) bottle of wine, watching one of their favorite horror movies for the 1,000th time, crying out ridiculous song ideas while wondering, ‘Why hasn’t anyone turned this into a campy musical yet?!’ This of course leads to the next logical step, a 2:30 a.m. Craigslist post from a sleep deprived writer/director, seeking a composer to ‘make beautiful musical theater with’ – because everyone knows all great composers seek work on Craigslist from writers that promise to pay them with his wife’s legendary meatballs.”

You can check out the proof of concept video that they released last year to get an idea of what it will be like below.

Not only that but they just had a successful sneak preview over at Pearl Studios NYC so they plan on opening during hte Halloween season of 2015 which sounds like a great time to try to make it out to New York if you ask me.

If given the chance would you head out to see ‘Redrum: The Unauthorized Musical Parody of The Shining’?
