Taking a diversion from the comic books, it was revealed that Corey Stoll had been cast as villain Darren Cross in the upcoming Peyton Reed-directed ‘Ant-Man’ movie, slated to be the next entry into the Marvel cinematic universe.  But in the movie, Cross takes on the super villain identity of Yellowjacket.

This varies from the comic, in which Ant-Man himself, Hank Pym actually adopts the Yellowjacket identity himself.  In the comics, Yellowjacket was a split-personality, with neither Pym nor Yellowjacket realizing they were the same person.  As Yellowjacket, Pym became more reckless and aggressive, at one point beating his new wife The Wasp (to differing degrees depending on the comics in which the scene is shown) and eventually betrayed The Avengers in order to try and retain his position on the team.

Of course, this isn’t the only difference that ‘Ant-Man’ will make from the comics.  In the movie, Hank Pym was the title hero, but that was years ago.  He did marry Janet Van Dyne, but rumor has it, she will have died before the present-day scenes.  Her daughter, Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lily), will instead be the female lead and serve as the love interest for Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang, the modern Ant-Man who will take on the role from Pym.

How will all this work out?  Marvel has only made a few missteps in the past, but has been on a major role ever since ‘Thor’, so I have faith the studio will once again deliver a fantastic, geeky experience.

In the latest news, a photo was snapped of Stoll as Darren Cross on the set of ‘Ant-Man’, which you can see below:

There’s not much to be gleaned from this.  He’s supposedly filming a scene where he is out to dinner with Hope.  He does have a sophisticated, debonaire look, which could easily sway to sinister.

In possibly even bigger news, new concept art may reveal what Cross will look like once he takes on the Yellowjacket identity.

Pretty neat, huh?  The comic book version is a simple spandex suit with large fin-like wings, which looks cool on the printed page and even in animation, but would probably not work on the big screen.  This more insectoid, armored look seems like a better choice.

Unfortunately, the artwork isn’t in HD and, in fact, isn’t even confirmed as being legit… but it certainly looks too elaborate for “fan art.”

I will say, that unfortunately, because of the low quality of the image, it’s hard to fully make out, but it looks like he is engulfed by yellowjacket wasps, which in my opinion more closely resembles the Spider-Man villain Swarm, whose body is made up on hundreds of bees.  You can check him out below:

There is an unavoidable comparison, IF the art work turns out to look the way I think it looks.  But then again, a clearer image could reveal that the villain actually has completely different powers that simply aren’t discernible yet.

What do you think?  Is this the right way to go with Darren Cross/Yellowjacket?
