In the eye-opening video below, “The Movie Maniacs” painstakingly present every alcoholic beverage consumed during the first 4 seasons of ‘Game of Thrones.’ Pay attention to the number of times a Stark is forced to take a drink, as it explains why they come in second on the tally by the end of the presentation. And I’m sure you won’t be surprised by the family who takes first place, with a whopping 103 drinks.
As the video demonstrates, the denizens of Westeros clearly have a way of coping with the harshness of their lives, and that method entails the downing of gallons of wine. While the Lannisters may have the most drinks (103! Especially when compared to 2nd place, the Stark family with only 16!), they also get the most screen time. Tyrion especially, being essentially the star of the series, takes more drinks in the series than anyone, but he also enjoys the most audience attention, and really has a lot to tackle. Over the course of the series we’ve seen him cope with leading troops into battle, maintaining order in the King’s Landing, leading troops to defend the capital, a forced marriage, and then a trial for a regicide he did not commit, all the while dealing with the family squabbles and bigotry against him because of his size. Who wouldn’t drink?
The other alcoholic it seems would be Cersei, but who didn’t see that one coming? She’s rarely seen without a glass in hand, and with all the schemes she juggles, who really blames her for taking the edge off. And if the rumors about next season are any indication, she’s going to need some wine barrels delivered to her quarters ASAP.
It was interesting to note that some of the more ‘moral’ and ‘virtuous’ houses (Mormont, Targaryen, Tyrell, Martell) have lower numbers (highest being 5 for the Tyrell’s, due to Sir Loras needing to dull his uh…. urges), all which might subtly indicate the direction a house is going.
SPOILER ALERT – For example, the two houses with the highest drink count have suffered the most tragedy, with almost all the Starks being wiped out, and now the Lannisters losing Tywin, Tyrion being exiled from the capital for his crime, and Jamie losing his hand. Perhaps the best way to win the throne is to stay sober!
