While we didn’t have a glowing review for ‘The Maze Runner,’ it would appear that box office sales and the general response was a lot more positive as a sequel titled ‘The Scorch Trials’ is now due out! For fans of the first film it sounds as if you won’t have to be waiting long for the follow up either as a release date of September 18, 2015 has already been announced.

With ‘The Maze Runner’ having earned $32.5 million domestically last weekend with global earnings breaking $81.5 million over the past two weeks, the film has already surpassed it’s $34 million production budget. With this only factoring in a week’s worth of sales domestically and being this profitable, a sequel was a no brainer.

The film will be based on the second novel in this trilogy by the same name by James Dashner. There is currently no word if Wes Ball will be back to direct or Noah Oppenheim is penning the second script. While we can assume the stars are all under contract for three to four films, there is no official word on who is attached to return and mentioning suspected names could spoil who survives and who failed to make their way through the first maze.

If you are not familiar with ‘The Scorch Trials,’ here’s a synopsis of the novel:

Solving the Maze was supposed to be the end.

Thomas was sure that escape from the Maze would mean freedom for him and the Gladers. But WICKED isn’t done yet. Phase Two has just begun. The Scorch.

There are no rules. There is no help. You either make it or you die.

The Gladers have two weeks to cross through the Scorch—the most burned-out section of the world. And WICKED has made sure to adjust the variables and stack the odds against them.

Friendships will be tested. Loyalties will be broken. All bets are off.

There are others now. Their survival depends on the Gladers’ destruction—and they’re determined to survive.
