While I had no interest in Sony’s upcoming reboot of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer,’ I might be changing my tune now that Mike Flanagan (‘Absentia’, ‘Diver’) and Jeff Howard (‘Somnia’, ‘Gerald’s Game‘) are on board to pen the script. The two had a huge success with their co-writing on ‘Oculus‘ and I’ve been dying to see more of what this writing duo can put together. That being said, they are going to have to really pull off a miracle to find a way to make this franchise interesting and fresh enough for me to want to even imagine revisiting it in a reboot format.

The original film was released in 1997 and was a slasher film about four friends who accidentally killed a man in a car accident. Or did they? That Fall the foursome all start receiving notes from someone who claims “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and starts to hunt them down and kill them off one by one. The film was successful enough to spawn a 1998 sequel titled ‘I Still Know What You Did Last Summer’ which had Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. return to the cast and a 2006 direct to disc release of ‘I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer’ which concluded the trilogy. The third installment had a new cast and was loosely based on a prank related to the events from the first two films.

The new film is set to be produced by Neal Moritz who also produced the original two films. There is no word yet on a director or any actors being attached to the project.

Maybe they can find a way to bring back Freddie Prince Jr. (‘Scoobie-Doo’, ‘Witches of East End,’ ‘Star Wars Rebels’) and have him in as a cameo or a surprise twist, place him in the killer’s boots!

Are you looking forward to a return to ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ or do you think that Sony should be finding something a little more original to be spending millions of dollars to produce?
