Well, all of the winners of the Nebula Awards except Samuel Delaney are women, and that’s pretty cool.

Though there have been years of completely male sweeps, this is the first year all women have rounded out the ranks of winners, and it is a marquee year for writers from an incredibly diverse background. This is especially important as the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), the organizers of the Nebula Awards, have been having a rather rough time of it when it comes to sexism. The editor of the SFWA ‘Bulletin’, Jean Rabe, resigned over issues related to sexism, and there was a big scandal from a listserv of SFWA writers about being too politically correct which likened Mary Kowal (the former secretary) to a dog which happened only this past February.

When it comes to Science Fiction awards, however, this year has been a incredibly win for women. Maybe the time is coming when science fiction writers will be as diverse as the worlds they are writing about.
