In what is the first original scripted series on WGN, it looks like their gamble paid off as ‘Salem’ has just been renewed for a second season. The show is only three episodes in of its thirteen episode run, but already the ratings have guaranteed we’ll be seeing at least one more round of the show.

For those who haven’t been watching the series, it is based around the witch trials that took place in Salem in the 17th century. The show follows Shane West as Captain John Alden who just returned from war. On his return, it is clearly obvious that the town is gripped with panic over the rise of witches in their community. Also upon his return, he discovers that his once love, Mary Sibley (played by Janet Montgomery) is now married to a man he once hated. The one thing he doesn’t know is that she is actually the head witch that runs Salem and the witch trials that are occurring are being done on her orders.

According to the ratings, the series debuted with 3.4 million total viewers with 1.5 million of them among the key adult 18-49 demographic. These numbers are factoring in seven days with DVR viewings, so while the numbers weren’t based just on live viewings alone, it was still impressive for the network’s first piece of original content.

According to Matt Cherniss, president and general manager at WGN America:

“At WGN America, we are committed to delivering compelling, brand-defining programming rich with fascinating characters and ‘Salem’ has done just that. Brannon Braga, Adam Simon, the talented cast and our great partners at Fox 21 have opened up an intriguing world that has captivated viewers. The fans have been fantastic and we plan to continue keeping them on the edge of their seats.”

With the second season already greenlit, production is slated to begin later this year for another 13 episodes to be aired sometime in 2015.
