Good news for everyone that has been waiting for the new ‘Star Trek’ series. Okay, well, for the new unofficial ‘Star Trek’ series that has a lot of official actors, with one such actor being everyone’s favorite Vulcan (or at least mine), Tim Russ, and everyone’s favorite muttering Russian, Walter Koenig. ‘Star Trek: Renegades’ is coming soon!

Both Russ and Koenig were a part of a independent venture called ‘Of Gods and Men’ (which incidentally also had Nichelle Nichols), but ‘Renegades’ is unique in that it is crowdfunded. It is also unique in that it has far outreached its funding goals both for principal photography, and for visual effects (the latter only asking for 20K, and reaching 132K with still a week left to fund the effort).

At Starfest in Denver, Tim Russ expanded on some of the details of when ‘Renegades’ will come out. Everything, except for one tiny scene, has been filmed. All that needs to be done is wait for the CGI. Russ expects the movie to be out in fall of this year.

“This is not your grandmother’s ‘Star Trek’,” he tells the crowd.  For one thing, there will be a captain who is a descendent of Khan “who’d would throw you in airlock sooner than a brig” states Russ. For another, Section 31 is involved. The crew will be a rogue crew that has been forced to come together, and Tim Russ admits that some will die. “Though,” he points out, “they will not be wearing red shirts.”

Other actors involved will be Sean Young (‘Blade Runner’), and Roberto Picard.

Set 11 years past ‘Voyager’, ‘Renegades’ is designed to move the ‘Star Trek’ story forward, and judging from Tim Russ’ enthusiasm  about the filming, the cast and crew, and the story, it is going to be something for all Trekkies to watch. Whether this will feed into a new ‘Star Trek’ series, however, remains to be seen.

It is ten years after Voyager’s return from the Delta Quadrant, and the Federation is in a crisis. The Federation’s main suppliers of dilithium crystals are disappearing. Space and time have folded around several planets, effectively isolating them from any contact with outside worlds. And this phenomenon is not natural – someone or something is causing this to happen. This necessitates drastic measures; some of which are outside the Federation’s normal jurisdiction. For this, Admiral Pavel Chekov, head of Starfleet Intelligence, turns to Commander Tuvok, Voyager’s former security officer and current head of the newly reorganized Section 31. Tuvok must put together a new covert, renegade crew – mostly outcasts and rogues – even criminals. This new crew is tasked with finding out what is causing the folding of time and space, and stopping it – at all costs. But will they be able to put aside their differences and stop trying to kill one another in time to accomplish their mission?
