I’ve said this a few times already, but it never hurts to drive the point home: ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the best solo Marvel movie so far. From the script to the performances to the directing, the final cut presented to the masses was just on point. But what didn’t make the cut? What ended up on the cutting room floor so that the Sentinel of Liberty’s latest adventure could be as tight as it could be? Directors Joe and Anthony Russo recently answered those questions.

In a lengthy interview with Collider, the co-directors shared that the latest Phase Two film was essentially what was written, but about five short scenes ended up being cut. Joe Russo described one of them as a “master class in acting between Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson”:

“It’s when they find Fury in the Bunker. Natasha takes issue with the fact that Fury did not let her in on the fact that he was still alive; she actually believed he was dead. It’s a nice reflective moment for her where she goes ‘Oh my God, this is the world I invited myself to?’ Fury says, ‘I had to keep the circle small.’ Short scene, but it’s a great one.”

He went on to say that it was actually Johansson’s suggestion to cut this scene, which isn’t something you hear from actors too often:

“After she saw the movie, and loved it, she goes: ‘It just seems there was a bit of a drag in that section. This is crazy for me to recommend, but do we really need that scene between me and Sam? Is there really narrative content in that scene? You could still get the arc out of my character without it. So, she actually recommended cutting her own scene.”

Luckily, we’ll be able to see this scene and more whenever the film is released on DVD and Blu-Ray. But until then, check out the full interview with the filmmaking brothers below, where they discuss the logic behind Nick Fury’s eye scanner, Arnim Zola, the post-credits scenes, and more:
