What happens when Chris Pratt, James Gunn and Marvel’s Kevin Feige sit down for a quick interview on their upcoming film ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’? Aside from a fun time, we also got a slew of fun new details about the film!

Over the weekend, the trio participated in a fan Q&A and were very open about the film. My favorite quote is when Gunn described the film as “the Marvel flavor, but [having] a lot of old-school space opera about it” which is exactly what the first trailer sold me on actually being. This is the first film I didn’t think Marvel could pull off and when the first trailer was released, it had jumped to the top of my must see list.

When talking about the characters that would be giving us a galaxy spanning universe, Feige jumped in with:

“All of us at the studio wanted to do something new, wanted to do something original … Excited about doing something, frankly, that most people had never heard of.” and Gunn said that “I do think that it is a completely original movie, and I do think that it is a character piece at the core of it … Finding actors that were specifically suited to doing each of those roles is what we needed to do … That’s what the Guardians are, an eclectic band of characters who come together for a single purpose.”

Regarding the risk of making a film like this, Feige mentioned that every Marvel film has been a risk and that the difference here is the setting of the film:

“Couldn’t be more distant in geography to the other films. 99% of this movie takes place on the other side of the galaxy. Nevermind the themes and character interaction… there are a handful of characters you’ll see in this movie who will carry through to other films as threats to Earth.”

I can’t wait to see which of the characters will come back either due to Thanos or just in general to be a further part of the Marvel Universe.

Believe it or not, Gunn actually didn’t plan on seeing Pratt for the role of Star-Lord and it was his casting director had set it up.

“You know the story about how [Pratt] came about, right? I didn’t want to see him audition. We went through a lot of people, and we saw a lot of really good actors. I was looking for somebody who inhabited the role, but really went beyond it, like Robert Downey Jr. for Iron Man. … I kept saying, ‘No, no, no.’ … He was maybe reading for 20 seconds, and I went, ‘Holy God.’ He was the one, I just knew it.”

It’s funny how that worked out. From what we’ve seen in the trailer, I think everyone is going to agree with Gunn!

Pratt is a great example on what some actors are willing to go through for their roles as he had to get in shape for it and fast:

“It seemed fast, but it wasn’t, it was about 7 months. It’s fast considering how much weight I lost. But I grew up as a wrestler and did a lot of sports growing up. There’s a certain mindlessness to it that I like, you don’t have to think. And I’m great at that. … I literally worked my ass off. … It works because the guy’s a guy from a comic book. Look at those guys.”

While I’m sure I could get pretty lean in 7 months of the right diet and work out, there’s a certain level of muscle he was showing off in the trailer that I just don’t think I could get to.

Could we see Gunn return for a sequel? While not directly asked, he did share a fun tidbit about his enjoyment on making this one compared to other films:

“I generally hate making movies. I feel driven to make films. I kind of like pre-production, and I kind of like post-production, but the actual making of the movie is kind of Hellish for me, but I actually enjoyed this film more than most movies.”

Oh, and he shared a possible casting spoiler. This one I had no idea about but am suddenly excited and you should skip the rest of this sentence if you are a fan of the comic and know the crew like the back of your hand.  Here’s a spoiler of someone else they might be sticking into the cast:

“Rocket was always going to be the focus. But, fans of Cosmo will have to wait and see the movie.”

Oh boy! That will be a riot to see him in there.
