A couple years back we got our first unofficial look at what ‘RoboCop‘ was going to look like in the new film and quite a few people were in an uproar (even though it has eventually calmed down now and has been outshadowed by what seems to be the pure awesomeness many of us are hoping this film will be). Well, in a recent interview with Yahoo, Gary Oldman (‘The Dark Knight Rises‘, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2‘) ends up revealing that those leaked photos were actually leaked by the studio itself!

Apparently the idea was to get the masses used to the look of the suit before the movie was released. I get it. While it didn’t go over well initially, it’s really grown on almost everyone I’ve spoken with who didn’t think it was a good idea to drastically change the look. I myself once fell into that category. Oldman’s direct quote can be seen below at the 1:44 mark:

“We set that up. We leaked those pictures. That was absolutely a staged photo shoot. What happens is, you’ll get someone who will leak pictures, so it’s going to happen anyway, So, take a ‘paparazzi shot’, but at least of the suit at an angle that you like, so you can ‘leak’ your picture first, and have some control over it.”

So the entire thing was a complete setup! Making such a drastic change to a character when rebooting a franchise can be offsetting for some expecially when that reboot is not going to follow the original movie. You are getting something new and different. Personally, in the long run I feel they made a good call here.

In retrospect, are you glad they leaked the new look so early in order to prepare us for it and beat out the paparazzi? Share your thoughts on their method to initially market the film below!
