We haven’t heard much about Nicolas Winding Refn‘s (‘Drive’,’Valhalla Rising’) upcoming ‘Barbarella‘ television series in awhile but we finally have some good news. Clearly things are moving forward as Amazon Studios has just inked a deal to create a pilot for the series! The next goal will be picking who the studio will want as the showrunner. Of course, this is all extremely early news as even with a pilot order, this doesn’t guarentee that Amazon will order an entire season.

It’s been a year since Refn first became attached to the project.  Last we heard, the director hired Neal Purvis (‘Skyfall’,’Casino Royale’) and Robert Wade (‘Quantum of Solace’,’Die Another Day’) to write the pilot script and that Martha De Laurentiis, widow of original Barbarella producer Dino De Laurentiis, is on board as a co-executive producer. The company behind the series is Gaumont International Television who is known for ‘Hannibal‘ and ‘Hemlock Grove‘.

The series will of course be based off of either the classic film from 1962 or the comic book. Here’s a short synopsis:

In the far future, a highly sexual woman is tasked with finding and stopping the evil Durand-Durand. Along the way she encounters various unusual people.

All I know is that they are going to have to work hard to find the perfect mix of acting talent and sexual energy to pull off portraying Barbarella and still keep a straight face!

Are you excited to hear that the show is still moving forward or is it still so early that you just need more details? Who do you think would be great to play the role?
