While the recent behind the scenes video that teased ‘Penny Dreadful’ caught my attention, it didn’t give us an actual feel for the show and just some hints at it’s creative direction. Unlike the previous teasers which also didn’t show much, Showtime has finally released a teaser where we finally get a bit of onscreen terror.

This is the first teaser which gives us some actual footage and brings us Eva Green’s (‘Dark Shadows‘,’Casino Royale’) character, Vanessa Ives, praying to a crucifix mounted on the walls in a candle lit room. She is clearly praying for her salvation as it’s quickly shown that she is possessed by something as her eyes go white and “We all have our demons” is thrown in our face.

I’m a little torn on this trailer. While I don’t expect possession to be the main focus of the show, I do know it won’t be a selling point for me if it is. I absolutely love the rise of horror on television and Showtime puts out some amazing work (and needs something to fill the hole ‘Dexter‘ left in it’s time slot) but we really have to all hope that possession isn’t what the story is centered around. Between all of the recent films dealing with it and last year’s ‘American Horror Story: Asylum’, the subject has been overused. Of course, with Fox putting out a ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen‘ show and ‘Dracula‘ already on the air, many of the classic monsters found within this one will have already been being featured elsewhere.

The upside to television right now is all of the horror on it, the downside is we’re starting to see too much of it cross over in concepts. As a fan of what Showtime has been putting out recently, I hope their concept is original enough to just work.
