After sort of playing Robin in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, and impressing audiences to the point that nearly everyone was clamoring for him to play Batman/Nightwing/Robin in an additional movie series… or to play any super hero, for that matter, with his name popping up in discussions for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, ‘Doctor Strange’ and ‘Ant-Man’!  He is also part of ‘Sin City: A Dame To Kill For’.

Now he’s attached to another comic book adaptation, ‘The Sandman’ based on DC/Vertigo’s ‘The Sandman’ created by Neil Gaiman, which is currently celebrating its 25 year anniversary with the miniseries ‘Overture’.  So far, Gordon-Levitt is only attached to produce the film along with David Goyer, but he may wind up directing and/or starring as well!

He took to Twitter to stress that at this point, however, he was just going to produce:

‘The Sandman’ was one of the most influential comics of the late 80s-90s, and varied its style from fantasy to horror from story to story.  The main character was Morpheus (also known as Dream) who ruled the realm of dreams.  Among his siblings was the break-out character Death, his sister who appeared as a goth teenage girl.  (Morpheus himself was visually inspired by Robert Smith, the lead singer of goth band The Cure.)

Gordon-Levitt directed the film festival hit ‘Don Jon’ but ‘The Sandman’ would be a huge departure in tone and scale.  And the role of Morpheus would also be a major departure for the actor, but maybe this will be like ‘Edward Scissorhands’ for Johnny Depp.  That role skyrocketed him to fame, but also established that Depp had huge range.  This could open a lot of doors for JGL.

What do you think?  Is this a good fit?
