‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ actor Simon McBurney is heavily rumored to be “in line” for a role in the sequel to the bazillion dollar smash hit ‘The Avengers’ and word has it that he may embody none other than Edwin Jarvis.  In the Marvel cinematic universe, Tony Stark is assisted by J.A.R.V.I.S. (Just A Rather Very Intelligent System… little bit of a stretch there) an artificial intelligence that helps run his (now destroyed) Malibu mansion and Stark Tower, which was implied to be becoming Avengers Tower at the end of ‘The Avengers’.  In the comics, the Avengers famously occupied Tony Stark’s mansion, referred to as Avengers Mansion until recent years when they moved to a skyscraper called Avengers Tower.

Edwin Jarvis was Tony Stark’s butler, who later became the Avenger’s greatest ally, going to any length necessary to see to their needs.  There have been rumors that J.A.R.V.I.S. (previously voiced by Paul Bettany) will actually morph into Ultron, the team’s robotic adversary who will be portrayed by James Spader in the new film.  With the absence of J.A.R.V.I.S., does that open the door for Jarvis to enter the scene?  With the love showered on humble everyman Agent Phil Coulson, I think a loveable English butler could prove quite endearing to audiences.

In other news, there is actually one Marvel cinematic super hero that isn’t currently an Avenger.  Black Widow guest starred in ‘Iron Man 2’ and Hawkeye made a cameo in ‘Thor’.  But Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes has appeared in two Iron Man movies, yet wasn’t recruited into the super team when they came together to battle an alien invasion.  Rhodes originated as War Machine, before adopting the more jingoistic Iron Patriot guise in ‘Iron Man 3’.

Word has it, Cheadle’s Iron Patriot will actually enter the fray, battling Ultron alongside the other heroes, who will already be joined by The Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and possibly even The Falcon (Anthony Mackie), who will make his debut in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’.  That’s a LOT of heroes!  But I think prior to The Avengers, you could have said that about that assemblage.

Cheadle and Mackie are adding some diversity at least.  That would be a welcome shift.  And since no one really takes my advice, can I just suggest Kerry Washington as Spectrum?  I just really want Kerry Washington to play a super hero.  Please?

Well, what do you think?  Do you want to see a human Jarvis, assisting the Avengers?  Do you think Iron Patriot deserves a place on the team?  Sound off in the comments below!
