Well, after many rumors have circulated, it appears that Nightwing might be guaranteed to make an appearance in ‘Batman Vs. Superman‘.  It was previously rumored that the character would appear and that he would have had a falling out with Batman, with the pair not speaking in years.  Then casting rumors emerged… twice.  Now Warner Brothers is actually taking steps to copyright the name ‘Nightwing’ for licensing reasons.  On November 8th, they filed for registrations at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for an image they referred to as “Nightwing on a Bat.”  In other words, the comic book’s current logo:

This copyright is in order to allow Warner Brothers to slap the logo on a variety of products, specifically:

Clothing for men, women and children – namely, shirts, t-shirts, sweatshirts, jogging suits, trousers, pants, shorts, tank tops, rainwear, cloth baby bibs, skirts, blouses, dresses, suspenders, sweaters, jackets, coats, raincoats, snow suits, ties, robes, hats, caps, sun visors, belts, scarves, sleepwear, pajamas, lingerie, underwear, boots, shoes, sneakers, sandals, booties, socks, slipper socks, swimwear and masquerade and Halloween costumes and masks sold in connection therewith.

Really?  Suspenders and sun visors?  Does that really have to be a thing?  Yuck.  Dick Grayson would never be caught wearing most of these items.

But as the saying goes, wait… there’s more.  The name/logo has also been copyrighted for the production of:

Toys and sporting goods, including games and playthings–namely, action figures and accessories therefor; play sets for action figures; plush toys; balloons; bathtub toys; ride-on toys; equipment sold as a unit for playing card games; toy vehicles; dolls; flying discs; hand held units for playing electronic games other than those adapted for use with an external display screen or monitor; game equipment sold as a unit for playing a board game, a card game, a manipulative game, a parlor game and an action type target game; stand alone video output game machines; jigsaw and manipulative puzzles; paper face masks; skateboards; ice skates; water squirting toys; balls–namely, playground balls, soccer balls, baseballs, basketballs; baseball gloves; swimming floats for recreational use; kickboard flotation devices for recreational use; surfboards; swim boards for recreational use; swim fins; toy bakeware and toy cookware; toy banks; toy snow globes; paper party hats; and Christmas tree ornaments.

Honestly, didn’t they already have the character secured for toys?  I own a number of Nightwing action figures from different lines.  But now, I guess girls can get in on the acrobatic fun, with toy bakeware and cookware.  (WTF?!  Batman hasn’t even had stuff like that made!)

So it looks increasingly like Nightwing/Dick Grayson will be hitting the big screen.  And Target’s swimming accessories aisle.  And possibly Victoria’s Secret.  (See the lingerie listing.)

What do you think?  Are you ready to spend an entire paycheck on Nightwing paraphernalia?
