Guillermo Del Toro (‘Crimson Peak‘) and Travis Beacham (‘Clash of the Titans’) are writing ‘Pacific Rim 2’ at this very moment! Well maybe not the very second you are reading, this but it is being worked on right now! ‘Pacific Rim‘ is clearly a film that del Toro is passionate about and it was one highly entertaining popcorn flick! It’s a good thing, too, because with ‘Crimson Peak’, ‘Justice League Dark‘, ‘The Strain‘, and ‘Monster‘ already on his plate, this man has very little free time right now!

While a sequel has not yet been confirmed and Legendary has not yet given the project a green light, the two have high hopes that it will be. Del Toro’s exact words were:

“We are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate.”

While the film only grossed $100 million in North America it has earned 3 times that world wide, much of that being from China. This international success is what has been pushing the likelihood of a follow up forward. Personally, I was a little shocked to hear how little it pulled in at the box office domestically compared to the world wide release. While $100 million is nothing to scoff at usually US earnings tend to be slightly higher ratio wise.

While no hints were given on what the future may hold in store for the film, in the past del Toro has mentioned that a few ideas they’ve had could include a Kaiju and Jaeger hybrid as well as Charlie Day’s News Geiszler being a potential villain. So we have some ideas where the film might go, but nothing solid as there still isn’t anything set in stone. The film was left open ended enough without giving us enough details about the alien species to still be able to go in quite a few directions with the story.

So with progress being made (even without an official deal in place) are you excited for this sequel or was one round of giant robots fighting aliens enough? Sound off below!
