Earlier this month it was announced that Harvey Weinstein demanded 20 minutes to be cut from ‘Snowpiercer’. Let’s pretend for a second that length wasn’t an issue because according ot the reasoning on it that isn’t why it was being cut down.

The reason truly was because they wanted ‘Snowpiercer’ dumbed down for American audiences. Hey Weinsteins, thanks for thinking we can’t keep up with the countries from around the globe on understanding a film. Really from the bottom of my heart I appreciate that a film which made over $20 million in it’s premiere in Korea will be something we can’t figure out in the good old US of A (and because of that the English version will be dumbed down on the global release of it.)

It looks like the director himself, Bong Joon-ho isn’t being quite as critical of The Weinsteins as I am. Maybe it will be because they are tossing piles of money at him for the rights to release the film but his thoughts are as follows:

I came here after editing for the American version. I’ve never produced a new version for overseas premieres, and this is the first time I’m making a new version. Weinstein is actually being pretty soft toward editing, probably because it’s noticed how critics have praised the film and know how angry movie fans get over new edits. They even asked me which parts I want to include in the film.

So at the very least he was able to give some input on how he felt on what should or shouldn’t be cut from his movie. His response was very diplomatic. Of course one of the film’s star’s, Chris Evans (‘The Avengers‘) also had trouble being diplomatic when he mentioned he had only seen the full 125 minute version and thought it was beautiful. I really feel it was more of an attempt to not rock the boat and not how he really felt. It makes you wonder if any of the scenes found in the first ‘Snowpiercer’ trailer will end up being gone when the film finally premieres?

What do you think about these changes having to happen? Are you still eager to see the film or do you now plan on waiting for a director’s cut to get released even further down the road?

’Snowpiercer’ stars Chris Evans (‘Captain America,’ ‘The Avengers’), Song Kang-Ho (‘The Host,’ ‘Memories of Murder’), Tilda Swinton (‘The Chronicles of Narnia’), Jamie Bell (‘Man on a Ledge,’ ‘Jumper’), Alison Pill (‘The Newsroom,’ ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’), John Hurt (‘Immortals,’ ‘Merlin’), Ed Harris (‘Apollo 13,’ ‘The Truman Show’ ‘Pollock’) and Octavia Spencer (‘The Help’) and currently has no US release date.
