‘The Vampire Diaries’ Star Ian Somerhalder Not Happy With ‘The Originals’ Spinoff

Ian SomerhalderFans of the popular CW hit, ‘The Vampire Diaries’ have been recently thrilled to learn that it will be getting a spinoff show titled ‘The Originals‘. A successful spinoff means more vampires for fans of the show but not everyone is happy about the move. One cast member of ‘The Vampire Diaries’, Ian Somerhalder, is very unhappy about the changes he’s going to have to make.

Why is he unhappy? Well ‘The Originals’ is going to be taking a few actors from his cast such as Joseph Morgan (Klaus), Daniel Gillies (Elijah) and Claire Holt (Rebekah) when the new show moves to New Orleans. With that much of the cast slowly being replaced with new major characters, Somerhalder is concerned about his show:

“Are they [the replacement actors] gonna be good? Because it’s The CW, and everyone has to be pretty, and there aren’t a lot of pretty people that can act well.”

While you might want to laugh at that comment on face value, everyone knows that’s pretty damn true as well. The CW has in the past made some bad casting choices in exchange for a good look.

That’s not to say he’s mad at the cast themselves:

“Now, they’re going to be taking these characters that mean so much to our show. I’m insanely happy for everyone, but I’m not thrilled. Not that I mind sharing, I just don’t want to lose all these amazing actors on our show.”

So yes, good for them but honestly his concern is valid. If he’s going to be losing some great characters and stars what will be happening to his show? It’s clearly going to hurt.

Are you a fan of ‘The Vampire Diaries’? Are you excited for the spinoff or do you think it may harm the show you enjoy? Let us know!

The Originals

‘The Originals’ Synopsis

Family is power. The Original Vampire family swore it to each other a thousand years ago. They pledged to remain together, always and forever. Now, centuries have passed, and the bonds of family are broken. Time, tragedy and hunger for power have torn the Original Family apart. When Klaus Mikaelson, the original vampire-werewolf hybrid, receives a mysterious tip that a plot is brewing against him in the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans, he returns to the city his family helped build. Klaus’ questions lead him to a reunion with his diabolical former protégé, Marcel, a charismatic vampire who has total control over the human and supernatural inhabitants of New Orleans. Determined to help his brother find redemption, Elijah follows Klaus and soon learns that the werewolf Hayley has also come to the French Quarter searching for clues to her family history and has fallen into the hands of a powerful witch named Sophie.

Tensions between the town’s supernatural factions are nearing a breaking point as Marcel commands his devoted followers and rules with absolute power. For Klaus, the thought of answering to his powerful protégé is unthinkable, and he vows to reclaim what was once his – the power, the city and his family. While they wait to see if their sister, Rebekah, will leave Mystic Falls and join them, Klaus and Elijah form an uneasy alliance with the witches to ensure that New Orleans will be ruled by THE ORIGINALS once again.

The series stars Joseph Morgan (“The Vampire Diaries,” Immortals) as Klaus, Daniel Gillies (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Saving Hope”) as Elijah, Claire Holt (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Pretty Little Liars”) as Rebekah, Phoebe Tonkin (“The Vampire Diaries,” “The Secret Circle”) as Hayley, Charles Michael Davis (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Switched at Birth”) as Marcel, Daniella Pineda (The Fitzgerald Family Christmas, “Homeland”) as Sophie, Leah Pipes (“The Deep End,” Sorority Row) as Cami and Danielle Campbell (StarStruck, Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection) as Davina.

‘The Originals’ premieries on October 3rd 2013 on The CW

Mr Somerhalder was right. Not only did “The Originals” end up with some of the best actors on TV but they also snagged some of the best writers to boot. I really hated the backdoor pilot for this show but it has taken on its own identity and morphed into something quite wonderful. I hope they keep the same structure throughout any new seasons. Please leave out the sappy love stories and focus in on the complex story lines and the characters. If they absolutely have to insert a romantic involvement then they should keep it short and sweet like the one currently under way with Elijah and Celeste which is nothing more than a faded memory and not part of the driving story line. Poor Ian is stuck with having to watch the ping-pong triangle-mance that is Elena playing out for all eternity in the Vampire Diaries. Perhaps he should join all the other great actors who make up the Originals. I think he would fit right in. The Originals is one of the best supernatural dramas I’ve ever seen. I hope it outlives it predecessor by many years.
