It’s not surprising that with a new console comes a new 3D Mario game, and Nintendo has finally revealed their next Mario project for the Wii U.

Super Mario 3D World combines the formula of New Super Mario Bros. U with the set-up and gameplay of the 3DS title Super Mario 3D Land. Once again, players will make their way through various worlds, each mapped out by a themed overworld, making their way to the goal of each stage and discovering loads of secrets along the way. However, gameplay is similar to that of Super Mario 64, allowing for full environmental exploration in each level rather than creating yet another 2D side-scroller.

Anyone who has played Super Mario 3D Land will be immediately familiar with the structure and look of the game, though being on the Wii U allows for true-HD graphics. Nintendo has also included the four-player multiplayer that has become so popular in the New Super Mario Bros. series, which makes for a fun, challenging, and often chaotic experience. Each character will also have their own style of play. For instance, Luigi can jump much higher, but with less control, while Peach can float through the air and Toad can sprint.

Wii U owners won’t have to wait long, as Super Mario 3D World is set for release this December.
