Phase 2 of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe is underway with ‘Iron Man 3’ to debut in theaters in a couple weeks and now all eyes are on the next film to be released later this year, ‘Thor: The Dark World.’ Promotion has begun on the second film of Phase 2 as Marvel has just released the first poster for the film.

The poster features Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder wielding his mighty hammer. Lightening, naturally, surrounds him as does snow.

‘Thor: The Dark World’ is set one year after ‘The Avengers’ and finds Asgard threatened by the evil Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) and his Dark Elves of Svartalfheim bent of vengeance. Here’s the official synopsis of the film:

In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness.  Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Make sure you return to ScienceFiction.com on April 23rd to see the first trailer for the film!
