It’s been about three months since we’ve last heard from director Joseph Kosinski about the sequel to his 2010 film ‘Tron: Legacy’. He has been a little busy with his latest project, ‘Oblivion’ and hasn’t been able to talk much about else let alone ‘Tron 3’. Plus, according to his last update, the script was still in the works, so there’s not likely to be much development just yet, except that at we found out that Olivia Wilde would be returning to reprise her role as Quorra for the third trip to the Grid. But at WonderCon, while doing some press for his upcoming sci-fi actioner starring Tom Cruise, he gave Collider a quick update.

According to the report, a new draft for ‘Tron 3’, which is going under the working title of ‘TR3N’ right now, should be coming in about two weeks, and the director seems really stoked to get it:

“This is a story we’ve been working on since 2009, so that’s four years now.  I’m really excited about the idea that we have for it.  I think it delivers on the promise that both ‘TRON’ movies have made.  It opens the movie up, in a way that I think is going to give it a much broader appeal.  Whereas ‘TRON’ really, ultimately, in the end, catered most to ‘TRON’ fans, this idea broadens it some more, in really exciting ways.  But, it’s all about the script and making sure that that story is compelling enough to get all of us back together.  Those movies are hard to make.  It’s a two-and-a-half to three-year journey.  So, to go back in there and go back to the Grid, it’s going to have to be a pretty spectacular script.  We’ve got a great writer on it, so we’ll see.”

There’s numerous possibilities for this sequel because ‘Tron: Legacy’ left a few questions unanswered. ‘Tron 3’ has a lot of potential because it doesn’t have to be bogged down with all the introductory stuff from the first two films. Basically, I sense an epic war coming for Sam Flynn, Quorra, Tron, and the rest, and I can’t wait to see all of that unfold on the big screen.
