If the trailers for Tom Cruise’ new sci-fi flick, ‘Oblivion’, hasn’t grabbed your attention yet, then this new featurette will! With the film’s theatrical debut only a month away, Universal has released this nice behind the scenes video which features Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski as they talk about the plot and setting of the film amidst some great new footage.

Cruise plays Jack Harper, one of the last drone repairman who is stationed on Earth while the rest of humanity live in the clouds. Decades of war with an alien race called the Scavs have left Earth uninhabitable and it is Harper’s job to fix the drones that destroy any alien remnants left on the planet. But when a spacecraft crashes down during one of his deployments, he’s at odds when he finds a mysterious woman who survived the crash. Harper’s world is now shaken as everything he knows is seemingly wrong causing him to begin questioning his alliances. As it is with Cruise’s movies lately, the fate of humanity is in his hands.

The one advantage ‘Oblivion’ has over other features that are based on a book is that the author, in this case Kosinski, is also the director of the film. Because of this, he already had a strong vision prior to starting the project as to how he wanted the movie to look and feel. Michael Arndt wrote the big screen adaptation of the book, and if this is an example of Arndt sci-fi work, then I’m now doubly excited to see what he’ll be doing with ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’!

Synopsis:

On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.

Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

‘Oblivion’ opens in theaters on April 19th.
