Not too long ago the official ‘Doctor Who’ BBC site gave a sneak peak of the new interior of the TARDIS. It looks like they haven’t stopped there as they have also announced that there will also be a new title sequence and a new rendition of the theme song.

Whovians by now are used to changes when it comes to the series, and it wasn’t too long ago when the title sequence was changed. If you recall, the beginning of Season 7 showed a more greenish worm hole the TARDIS was travelling through and the credits shimmered on the screen as opposed to them flying towards the viewer as was seen since the nu-Who series began. Also each episode had it’s own ‘Doctor Who’ logo to correspond to the story. So it shouldn’t be any surprise that the BBC would want to kick of the show’s 50th anniversary by redesigning a few things.

What are the fans to expect? With regards to the new titles, the BBC is keeping mum.  “We can’t give too much away about the new-look titles,” they stated, “except to say they are wonderfully dramatic and striking, with a couple of unexpected touches. In short, they’re a perfect way to welcome back the Doctor!”

As for the iconic theme song, Whovians won’t have to worry as the BBC won’t be changing it to something new. The tune will only be receiving a “new arrangement” which they describe as remaining  “true to the original, written by Ron Grainer back in 1963.” However, they continued to say, “on Christmas Day you’ll hear it as it’s never sounded before. This latest version is more thrilling and powerful but retains that slightly scary quality that remains stirring no matter how many times you catch it.”

Fans may recall a slight change to the theme song to a more opulent orchestral sound when Matt Smith first took over the role in 2010 as well as a new logo of the show’s initials “DW” in the shape of the TARDIS. It ushered in a new era for the series as will the new titles and variation of the theme song will also surely do.

And while we’re on the subject of change, the ‘Doctor Who Magazine‘ published another view of the revamped TARDIS interior which you can check out below:

The photo fits quite well with the one previously released and we now get a better look of the new TARDIS console:

But the big reveal occured today, when this image of the bottom half was released with Matt Smith in his new Doctor outfit presenting the entire interior:

New titles, new theme song, new companion, new TARIDS and perhaps a new attitude in the Doctor… it looks like Christmas will be a time for new beginnings and a the start of a 50th anniversary year for Whovians to remember!

(Just for giggles, here’s a video that showcases all the new opening titles and themes from the past seaosons of ‘Doctor Who’ from 1963 – 2011. Enjoy!)
