Spike TV’s annual Video Game Awards show is quickly approaching, and this year is going to be a big one. Aside from the slew of new game trailers and announcements set to premiere, the VGA’s will also be featuring a brand-new award, “Best Video Game of the Decade.” Spike TV has partnered with Entertainment Weekly to make this award possible, and after much debate, the “EW brain trust” has come up with the following list of nominees.
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
- Half-Life 2
- World of Warcraft
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Wii Sports
- Mass Effect 2
- Red Dead Redemption
- Batman: Arkham City
Some of the choices may come as a bit of a surprise to many gamers, especially when considering Wii Sports and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. However, a lot of different factors were considered when coming up with this list, including the overall impact the titles had on the gaming industry as a whole, and the innovations that each title represents.
To declare a winner, EW and Spike TV are leaving it up to gamers. If you are interested in voting on the Video Game of the Decade, head on over the the official nominee announcement page to place your vote, and discover why each of these titles was nominated. The Video Game Awards Show is being held on December 7, and is once again hosted by show-favorite Samuel L. Jackson.
While the list represents some of the industry’s biggest accomplishments, my vote is definitely on Batman: Arkham City, which truly raised the bar for both licensed video game titles, and the action/adventure genre as a whole.
