In a unique move, Syfy has announced that they will launch an original digital series exclusively on Xbox called ‘Nuclear Family.’ The announcement marks the first time Syfy Digital has premiered a series on Xbox.

‘Nuclear Family’ is about John and Lynn who struggle with their family to survive after a mysterious nuclear explosion occurs. They stay on the move in the woods searching for their son, Grant, who becomes lost amidst the post-apocalyptic chaos. Meanwhile society has disintegrated and is now run by a savage clan called the Berserkers lead by someone who calls himself ‘The Man.’

The series has some familiar faces namely Corin Nemec (‘Stargate SG-1,’ ‘Supernatural,’ ‘The Stand’), Kinsey Packard (‘Infestation,’ ‘Sleeper Cell’), Ray Wise (‘Twin Peaks,’ ‘Robocop,’ ‘Mad Men’) and Sharon Lawrence (‘NYPD Blue,’ ‘Wolf Lake,’ ‘Drop Dead Diva’).

All 20 episodes will premiere on the Syfy App on the Xbox LIVE entertainment platform on October 1st, 2 weeks before it premieres on Syfy.com, Hulu, VOD, Syfy’s ap and Syfy’s new Roku channel on October 15th.

The move to exclusively premiere ‘Nuclear Family,’ on Xbox indicates Microsoft’s strong mission to make the console more of an entertainment unit rather than something to play games on. It sounds like a smart move on both Syfy’s and Microsoft’s part and time will tell if this method to watch television shows will catch on as much as Netflix has.

In the meantime, here’s the trailer for the web-series below:
