Within days of ‘The Avengers’ being released, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the sequel was in development. Last week, Joss Whedon officially signed on to write and direct ‘The Avengers 2’, as well as oversee Marvel’s Phase Two development, which includes the rumored live action ABC series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While having all those pieces in place was great, we had no idea when Phase Two would actually culminate with the sequel to the third-highest grossing movie of all time.

In previous reports, I had speculated that the film would be released in late 2015 or early 2016 to give Edgar Wright’s ‘Ant-Man’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ enough time to come together. Now, thanks to Collider, we can confirm that ‘The Avengers 2’ will be coming to theaters on May 1, 2015. Here’s an excerpt from the official press release from Marvel Studios and Disney:

SEQUEL TO MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS TO HIT THEATERS MAY 1, 2015

The Walt Disney Studios has announced a release date for Marvel Studios’ sequel to the biggest Super Hero blockbuster and third highest grossing film of all time, Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’. Joss Whedon returns to write and direct the ‘UNTITLED MARVEL’S AVENGERS SEQUEL’ set for release May 1, 2015.

Let the speculation begin as to what the final title for ‘Untitled Marvel’s Avengers Sequel’ will be. My money says that it’ll have something to do with Thanos, The Infinity Gauntlet, or The Thanos Imperative. But wouldn’t it be funny if it was ‘The Avengers: Infinity Crisis’? Take that, DC!
