New Green Lantern’s Name Uncovered

Previously, DC revealed that they would be releasing zero issues for each of their New 52 titles. For some, like ‘Captain Atom’ and ‘Voodoo’, this will mark the end of their titles’ runs, but for other characters like Mister Terrific, O.M.A.C., and Mother Machine, it’s resurrection after cancellation, at least momentarily. And then there’s ‘Green Lantern’ #0 that won’t mark the end or revitalization of a character. In fact, an all-new character will be introduced in these pages. The new Lantern first appeared in DC’s Free Comic Book Day book, and now he’ll be brought back into the spotlight thanks to Geoff Johns. From the cover of #0, we discovered that we may have our first Arab Green Lantern judging by the tattoo on his arm (which translates to “courage”), but we didn’t have a name for this mysterious new recruit to the Green Lantern Corps.

Now, thanks to Comic Book Movie and the solicitations for the upcoming ‘Green Lantern’ titles, we now know the name Earth’s new Green Lantern. Here’s the cover of ‘Green Lantern’ #13 followed by the listing:

Green Lantern #13

(W) Geoff Johns (A) Doug Mahnke, Mark Irwin (CA) Ivan Reis, Joe Prado

”Rise of the Third Army”!

Baz, Earth’s NEW Green Lantern, battles The Justice League! Meanwhile, The Guardians begin their final step in the destruction of the Lanterns by releasing the first of the Third Army soldiers!

There you have it. Earth’s newest protector is named Baz. Fun fact from CBM: In the UK, Baz is short for “Barry”. Not the most intimidating sounding name for a superhero, right? I mean, yeah, there was Barry Allen, but his villains knew him as The Flash. I don’t think “Barry” strikes fear into the hearts of the wicked, does it? Oh well! Baz may be the butt of a few jokes here and there, but he may prove to be a force to be reckoned with.

Baz translates to “Falcon” in both Hebrew and Arabic, which is a little more impressive than “Barry”.

If you look at his right hand (left as you look at the pic) you can see a tattoo that seems to be in arabic. ;-)

  • Baz

The word on his arm is written in arabic, and says “Al Shoojja3a” which is actually an adjective for “braveness.”

The name Baz is the shortened version of Basel, an arabic name which is also translated to “Brave” but as a noun. How do i know? It’s my name / nickname too, and I’m fluent in arabic. +1

He MAY be Arabic or even Israeli, BUT
The Character still looks like a ‘Mexican-Wrestler’!?!!
    ‘Verde-Libre’
…Haunted World of ‘El Superbeasto’… You have made it to the big-time, dude!
